MTV Video Music Awards host Russell Brand took several digs Sunday night at young stars wearing “purity rings” to pledge their virginity until marriage — and “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks wasn’t having any of it.

The British Brand — who is a celebrity in the U.K. but not well known in the U.S. — made a series of jokes centered on the Jonas Brothers and their rings. At one point, he even pretended he’d stolen a Jonas Brother’s virginity as he held a ring in his hand.

Sparks used her moment on stage to have her say about his constant remarks.

“It’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut,” Sparks spat back, the auditorium filling with applause. Sparks, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez are also among the young stars who have vowed to remain chaste.

New mosque dedicated to Christ in Madaba

While unexpected, this is a fascinating step by Muslims in Jordan.

Adnkronos International (AKI) is reporting that in the mosaic-rich town of Madaba, a Mosque has been dedicated to Jesus Christ in a bid to boost dialogue with Christians. Verses from the Muslim holy book, the Koran, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ have been inscribed on the facade of the mosque.

According to their source, the pan-Arab daily Al-Quds al-Arabi, a local moderate Osama Abu al-Walid is quoted as saying: “Calling Madaba’s new mosque after the son of the Virgin Mary is an important initiative to improve dialogue in our town, whose Christian and Muslim population coexists, …”

Local imam Jamal Safarati is further quoted to say: “In this way, we want to emphasise that Jesus is also our prophet and is loved by all Muslims.”

Here is a really good article on how Christians should respond to the news that Gov. Palin’s daughter, Bristol, is pregnant.

Being pro life means we want young women to turn away from abortion. We want them to choose life for their babies. Being pro life means we accept the fact that young women (teenage girls) get pregnant when they are not married and/or not ready to have children and we help them make a good decision.

This should not become a political football. It should be an act of compassion for Bristol and her baby.

When former drug dealer and now born again Christian Paul Ray wrote in his blog that the Muslim drug gangs in his hometown of Luton were “savages,” he was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime.

“It’s ok for the Muslims to do what they’re doing, and no one arrests them, but then if we start saying and disagreeing with what’s actually happening, then we’re breaching community cohesion and we get arrested for it,” he explained.

Washington Archbishop rips Pelosi on abortion

In a rare public rebuke of a top politician, the archbishop of Washington said Monday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was incorrect when she recently said the moment of conception has long been a matter of controversy within the Catholic Church.

In a release issued Monday night, Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl said Pelosi’s comments on “Meet the Press” on Sunday “were incorrect.”

Wuerl noted that Pelosi responded to a question on when life begins by mentioning she was Catholic.

The release quoted Pelosi as saying the church has not been able to come with a definition of when life begins.

“After Mr. Tom Brokaw, the interviewer, pointed out that the Catholic Church feels strongly that life begins at conception, she replied, ‘I understand. And this is, like, maybe 50 years or something like that. So again, over the history of the church, this is an issue of controversy,’ ” the release said.

Wuerl strongly disagrees.

He said, “We respect the right of elected officials such as Speaker Pelosi to address matters of public policy that are before them, but the interpretation of Catholic faith has rightfully been entrusted to the Catholic bishops. Given this responsibility to teach, it is important to make this correction for the record.”
