The only reason one might not realize this, is bias. How would religious people feel if the currency said “In God we don’t trust?” It would feel like a slap in the face, right? That’s how atheists feel. Having the “don’t trust” version vs. the “trust” version are legally identical, because they both consist of the government making a declaration in regard to religious belief. Our government has no business declaring trust in supernatural beings. What we are supposed to trust in as a nation is the power of democracy. Individuals are free to believe in gods or not—that is our personal business, not the business of state. Unfortunately, some admirable Americans who have filed suits to reverse this injustice have been had death threats.

Believers in a God and atheists all use the money. What words are imprinted have absolutely no bearing on how we use the money or how we think about God or no god. Lets pick our battles; this is not one I care to even think about beyond this email.

As and atheist, I believe in taking God off of the money. BUT! I am proud to live in a country where many people with many different beliefs can live together in harmony. So I say: believe in God or don’t. If you do, wear it on your shirt. Paint your car and house so all know your beliefs. Get a tattoo and show it to everyone you meet, I don’t care. Just respect our rights to not believe and don’t make others use your words. Besides, is it really showing your faith if others who don’t share that faith use it too?
