In God We Trust: The History

The Treasury Department reports that the motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” was added to coins around the time of the Civil War and was associated with increased religious fervor. Salmon P. Chase was the Secretary of the Treasury and he received thousands of requests from believers suggesting that the country express devotion to God by adding this phrase to our money.

The first request came in a letter on November 13, 1861 by Rev. M. R. Watkinson of Ridleyville, Pennsylvania. In a letter dated November 20, 1861, Secretary Chase instructed the director of the Philadelphia mint insert the motto:

In God We Trust - Faith and Facts “Dear Sir: No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins. You will cause a device to be prepared without unnecessary delay with a motto expressing in the fewest and tersest words possible this national recognition. It was found that the Act of Congress dated January 18, 1837, prescribed the mottoes and devices that should be placed upon the coins of the United States.”

Pollock suggested “Our Trust Is In God,” “Our God And Our Country,” “God And Our Country,” and “God Our Trust.” Chase picked “In God We Trust.” The motto first appeared on our coins in 1864 and by 1909 it was included on most all coins. During the height of the cold war, on July 11, 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Public Law 140 making it mandatory that all coinage and paper currency display the motto.

In God We Trust: The Motto

The National Anthem is usually sung with only the first verse. The last stanza of the The Star-Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 and later adopted as the national anthem, contains a variation of the phrase which became our motto; “…And this be our motto: In God is our trust. And the Star Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” The words were shortened to In God We Trust.

Urban Legends: Removing The Motto From Our MoneyIn God We Trust - Faith and Facts

New US dollar coins are being designed without the motto, “In God We Trust.”

According to this legend is FALSE. The motto is inscribed on the edge of the coin but is not omitted.

President Thomas Jefferson wrote, “The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time” and asked ‘Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are of God?’”

The Bible says:
It is better to trust the LORD than to put confidence in man” (Psalm 118:8).

It is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works” (Psalm 73:28 NKJV).

"Why I (A Black Man) Can't Vote For Obama"

Huntley Brown – is a fabulous concert pianist, a man of God and is a black man.  Here is his reasoning for not voting for Obama. My brother-in-law asked me to post this and I thought you might like it.

Why I Can’t Vote For Obama

A  few months ago I was asked for my perspective on Obama, I sent out an email with a few points. With the election just around the corner I decided to complete my perspective. Those of you on my e-list have seen some of this before but it’s worth repeating..

First I must say whoever wins the election will have my prayer support. Obama needs to be commended for his accomplishments but I need to explain why  I will not be voting for him.

Many of my friends process their identity through their blackness.

I process my identity through Christ. Being a Christian (a Christ follower) means He leads I follow. I can’t dictate the terms He does because  He is the leader. I can’t vote black because I am black, I have to vote Christian because that’s who I am. Christian first, black second.  Neither should anyone from the other ethnic groups vote because of ethnicity. 200 years from now I won’t be asked if I was black or white. I will be asked if I knew Jesus and accepted Him as Lord and Savior.

In an election there are many issues to consider but when a society gets abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning, to name a few, wrong, economic concerns will soon not matter.

We need to follow Martin Luther King’s words, “Don’t judge someone by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” I don’t know Obama so all I can go off is his voting record.

His voting record earned him the title of the most liberal senator in the US Senate in 2007. NATIONAL JOURNAL: Obama: Most Liberal Senator in 2007 (01/31/2008)

To beat Ted Kennedy and Hilary Clinton as t he most liberal senator, takes some doing. Obama accomplished this feat in 2 short years. I wonder what would happen to America if he had four years to work with.

There is a reason planned parenthood gives him a 100 % rating.
There is a reason the homosexual community supports him.
There is a reason Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Castro, Hamas etc. love him.
There is a reason he said he would nominate liberal judges to the Supreme Court.
There is a reason he voted against the infanticide bill.
There is a reason he voted No on the constitutional ban of same-sex marriage.
There is a reason he voted No on banning partial birth abortion.
There is a reason he voted No on confirming Justices Roberts and Alito. These two judges are conservatives and they have since overturned partial birth abortion. The same practice Obama wanted to continue.

Lets take a look at the practice he wanted to continue. Read more

The Doctrine of Election

Inspired by my eldest son and recent posts by my friends Barry and David, I plan to make a series of posts dealing with the Doctrine of Election.

Early in this discussion we must agree on a few items to have a meaningful dialogue.

  1. This is a discussion between believers. A person outside the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ does not have the power or presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives and is incapable of correctly understanding the Bible.
  2. This is a theological inquiry that seeks to discern what the bible teaches. It is not about fairness, goodness, telling other people what to believe, etc. “What does the bible teach about the relationship between God’s Sovereignty and man’s responsibility or free-will?” That is the question we are pursuing.
  3. There will be limits to our ability to thoroughly articulate sophisticated doctrine. God’s ways and thoughts are higher than mine and I will never be able to comprehend everything about the magnificence of The Father.
  4. We must agree on common vocabulary and eschew pejorative language that sounds good if we are trying to “put them in their place” but does not foster growth and understanding with a brother or sister in Christ. (see #1)
  5. At the end of our dialogues, there will still be disagreements.

Two terms we will have to engage are ‘paradox’ and ‘antinomy.’  Paradox is a a literary device used in story telling. It refers to an apparent contradiction. When Jesus says, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all,” Mark 9:36 NIV, He is using paradox.  Even an immature believer understands the concept.

Antinomy is another matter entirely. It means the mutual incompatibility, real or apparent, of two laws. It is a term used in logic and epistemology. The contradiction is not just apparent, it is profound and irreconcilable.

The issues we face in election are not merely paradoxical. They go deeper than that. They may, in fact, be characterized by antinomy. If the bible presents flatly contradictory viewpoints, from our perspective, it does not mean that God cannot completely resolve the matter based on His superior knowledge.

Enough for now. Tell me why I am right or wrong.

Also, Barry has a great quote from Charles Spurgeon at his blog.

Oh, my brothers and sisters in Christ, if sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies; and if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay, and not madly to destroy themselves. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for.

Shamed by Charles Spurgeon.

New mosque dedicated to Christ in Madaba

While unexpected, this is a fascinating step by Muslims in Jordan.

Adnkronos International (AKI) is reporting that in the mosaic-rich town of Madaba, a Mosque has been dedicated to Jesus Christ in a bid to boost dialogue with Christians. Verses from the Muslim holy book, the Koran, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ have been inscribed on the facade of the mosque.

According to their source, the pan-Arab daily Al-Quds al-Arabi, a local moderate Osama Abu al-Walid is quoted as saying: “Calling Madaba’s new mosque after the son of the Virgin Mary is an important initiative to improve dialogue in our town, whose Christian and Muslim population coexists, …”

Local imam Jamal Safarati is further quoted to say: “In this way, we want to emphasise that Jesus is also our prophet and is loved by all Muslims.”
