Look Who’s the Hypocrite NOW

I stumbled across a wonderfu blog that you may enjoy. This article on the National Organization of Women and their endorsement of Barack Obama and virulent criticism of Sarah Palin captures my feelings on the subject.

NOW has evolved into a group that is devoted to liberal causes that affect women rather than all causes that affect women. The “National Organization of Women” should be composed of ALL women regardless of their particular view on a particular issue. Instead, they focus on only a few issues and take a liberal view. Conservatives are clearly not welcome.

NOW says that although Sarah Palin is a woman she does not support women’s rights.  I have a hard time believing that Sarah Palin is not for pay equality and is not against violence towards women.  So in reality, NOW is only concerned about a candidate being pro-abortion.  I say pro-abortion as opposed to pro-choice because if they were really pro-choice then they wouldn’t have a problem with a woman choosing to be pro-life, choosing not to condone sex outside of marriage, and choosing options other than abortion.  These are their big issues with Sarah Palin.  Here we have a successful, articulate, intelligent mother of five as a vice-presidential candidate but NOW won’t get behind her because she is against letting them kill unborn women (and men).

So-called “comedian” Sandra Bernhard learns a lesson.

*** EDIT ***

California NOW has contacted us to say that no NOW chapter or affiliate supports McCain/Palin. No surprise there. They go on to say that, “California NOW has also been at the forefront of calling out sexism against Palin, as you can see from the site.” However, the article referred to does not mention any support for Palin.

I have asked for a clarification.

As I see it, Palin is the target of plenty of sexism. NOW should speak up. NOW should call for Palin’s opponents to stop questioning things like whether she brings her special needs child in public, how she would perform in office as a mother, etc. Now should call on Palin’s critics to stick to the issues. Instead of protecting this woman’s right to have a voice on equal footing with men so she can compete on the issues, they are getting behind the sexism.

I’m calling BS on your pro-abortion argument.

She, exercising her choice, wants to remove that choice from all other women. NOW is pro-choice. Palin is anti-choice.

I don’t see any hypocrisy in NOW not supporting her. She wants to actively scuttle one of their core beliefs… the right to choose.

Chris, wouldn’t your view be that they should be the “National Organization of Liberal Women”?

NOW has never celebrated a woman’s right to choose anything other than abortion, as the referenced article says.
They only celebrate women that choose abortion.

I would say Palin is Pro-Life and NOW is Pro-Death.

  4. CA NOW
    CA NOW says:

California NOW has issued a statement reaffirming support for Obama/Biden and repudiating Shelly Mandell’s support of Palin.

California NOW has also been at the forefront of calling out sexism against Palin, as you can see from the site.

    Chris says:

They have supported a woman’s right to choose things other than abortion.

They do promote abstinence, safe sex and adoption, but since those aren’t under the same sort of “attacks”, the abortion stuff gets more attention.

They also support more general equal rights, and fight for slimming the wage gap, etc.

    CA NOW,

Where in the article that you link to does it present any statement that denounces the sexism that has been directed at Sarah Palin?

So according to Chris Now is only about pro-abortion. I would have thought NOW: National Organization of Women would be about women’s issues, but thanks to Chris I know they are only about promoting abortion. Sad

What are you talking about Humbled Infidel?

    what part of
    > They have supported a woman’s right to choose things other than abortion
    and
    > They do promote abstinence, safe sex and adoption
    and
    > They also support more general equal rights, and fight for slimming the wage gap, etc

Made me sound like they were only interested in abortion?

What did you miss her Couric interview? She is hardly intelligent or articulate. The woman does not speak in complete sentences nor can she mention a single newspaper that reads.

Chris is right on! Just because she’s a woman does not mean she is in any way an advocate for women’s rights – including the right to choose. It’s sexist to think that just because she has a vagina, NOW should support her.
